Pick
up from your guesthouse. We climb through Troutbeck
with stunning views of the mountain High Street
with its Roman Road on our right to reach Kirkstone
Pass. At 1489 feet (454 metres), it is the highest
road pass in the Lake District. On one side
of the Pass is the Kirkstone Inn - the third
highest in England and reputed to have many
ghosts within its walls.

After
enjoying the far views we begin our descent
following the road past Brotherswater to reach
Ullswater often acclaimed as England's most
beautiful lake. We follow the shoreline with
stops for photos before reaching the car park
at Aira Force.
|
| 10:30 |
To
fully experience the Aira Force waterfalls we
allow a good half hour to walk through the woodland
and complete a circuit below and above the impressive
falls. Those who prefer can view the falls from
a distance. Probably the most famous of the
Lake District waterfalls, the main force falls
70 feet from below a stone footbridge. Aira
Force provides a glimpse of a landscaped Victorian
park with dramatic waterfalls.
|
| 11:15 |
The
landscape changes to sweeping moorland as we
drive north and then east towards Keswick with
far reaching views of the northern Lake District
and the mighty mountain of Skiddaw. We stop
at the ancient stone circle at Castlerigg with
a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding fells.
No one can say for sure why this circle was
built but you cannot fail to be impressed by
the location!
|
| 12:00 |
We
take a narrow mountain road past Moss Force waterfall
to the pass at Newlands. From
here it ts a sweeping descent with views of Crummock
Water and Buttermere and a stop at the Buttermere
Ayrshires tea room for refreshments or the delicious
homemade ice cream.
|
| 13:20 |
We
follow the shoreline of Buttermere lake before
climbing towards Honister Pass through a landscape
full of industrial history. At the top of the
pass is the reopened Honister slate mine where
we pause to take in the views and marvel at
the work involved in mining slate from this
remote location.
|
| 15:00 |
We
descend steeply into Borrowdale, a beautiful valley
famous for its Herdwick sheep whose lamb are a
local delicacy. We can stop at the Flock Inn where
you can learn about these special sheep, try some
Herdwick lamb stew or enjoy a cup of tea and homemade
cakes. All cakes are made locally by residents
of the village of Rosthwaite and your custom helps
to keep people in the village by supporting the
rural community.
|
| 16:00 |
We
follow the shoreline of Derwentwater and stop
when time permits for a short stroll along the
lake shore, before driving south past Grasmere
and Dove Cottage to reach Bowness and journeys
end. |
