Pick
up from your guesthouse or from Windermere station.
Pick up from Oxenholme station is available
on request. We depart up the eastern shore of
Lake Windermere towards Ambleside enjoying the
superb lake views. Soon we follow the River
Brathay to reach our first stop at Colwith Bridge.

Colwith
Force. We step off the road and into a beautiful
moss-rich oak woodland. Created by a moist climate
and acid soils this rare habitat is of international
importance. We walk alongside the river, drawn
towards the sound of the nearby waterfall. We
soon see Colwith Force as it drops in several
stages down a total height of about 15m with
the final double spout being the most spectacular
feature.

11:30
Blea
Tarn. Now we drive through the Little Langdale
Valley – a pastoral scene of cattle and
sheep grazing beneath high mountains. The road
becomes narrower as we climb into the mountains
to the spectacular location of Blea Tarn (a
small mountain lake). A short walk through heath
and fern takes us to a lovely viewpoint above
the tarn where we can see the high point of
our tour dwarfed by the craggy face of the Langdale
mountains.

12:00
High
point. We reach the top of the pass to look
down into the valley of Great Langdale and up
at the high peaks popular with hikers and climbers.
This whole landscape was created first by volcanoes
and then sculpted by the power of glacial ice.

12:30
Skelwith
Force waterfall. We drive through the old slate
mining villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater.
We follow the river - first in our tour bus
and then on foot to the spectacular finale at
Skelwith Force. It is a short 10 min hike to
the River Brathay where on still days the mountains
are reflected in the water and the views are
stunning. The river soon turns into a roaring
torrent as we approach the powerful waters of
Skelwith Force.
Our
trail leads through the Kirkstone Slate Galleries
to Chester's tea rooms where we rejoin the tour
bus for the return journey to Bowness. If there
is time we can take afternoon tea by the river
or visit Grasmere for some famous Gingerbread..
