Tour Description

The Lake District of Beatrix Potter tour is ideal for those who wish to combine a leisurely scenic tour through the south lakes with some of the most popular attractions. The tour focuses on the life of Beatrix Potter and her importance to the Lake District not only as a childrens storyteller but also as a farmer and champion of the local herdwick sheep. You will visit Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter with its beautiful garden and original furnishings.

We follow quiet backroads alongside the River Brathay through a mossy woodland, teeming with bluebells in the Spring, to reach the small mountain lake at Tarn Hows. This well known beauty spot affords wonderful views and photo opportunities before we descend a narrow road high above Yewdale. Way below is the white farm house of Yew Tree Farm formerly owned by Beatrix Potter and used in the filming of 'Miss Potter'.

At Coniston Water we stop for stunning lakeside views with the mountain mass of Coniston Old Man rising high above the water and village of Coniston. We drive over Hawkshead Hill to reach Hawkshead, a pretty village with narrow lanes, ancient church, Beatrix Potter Gallery and the famous grammar school attended by the Lake District poet William Wordsworth. We spend approx 50 minutes in the village.

Hill Top, the former home of Beatrix Potter, is now a carefully managed property owned by the National Trust.  Your ticket is pre booked so no waiting in line and guaranteed entry to this historic house. After visiting Hilll Top we drive through woodland alongside Windermere to reach the train station at Haverthwaite. The Furness line was built in the 1860s and is an introduction to the industrial heritage of the area where the train and steamers were a vital link in the industrial development of the Lake District. Now the two combine into a popular visitor attraction and make a wonderful way to finish a most varied afternoon tour.

Why Lake District Tours?

I never could have imagined such a great experience at Hill Top, one of the busiest sights in the Lakes. I had imagined crowds upon crowds of people, but it was exceptionally pleasant and peaceful.
I'm sure some of this was mere luck or that it wasn't full summer season, but Andy's inside knowledge certainly had a part in this great experience! Also went to other excellent sights I would otherwise not have known about. Great experience with an outstanding guide!

My sisters and I, one of whom is a rabid Beatrix Potter fan (she named her country property "Hilltop") had a most enjoyable tour of the sites and the district with Andrew. He was a fountain of knowledge about Potter's legacy in the district and the district itself. He is a very pleasant and instantly likable fellow with a relaxed manner and had a gentle but firm way of keeping us on schedule. Our van was spacious and impeccably clean. I wouldn't hesitate to engage him for another tour.
